Chapter 15

Bertia 17 Years Old (5)

Part 3/3

Translated by LynneSuzuran & Senhiro

“Eh? Lèse-majesté? Among other crimes? What are you talking about…”

“As a consequence, we agreed that along with Baron Inderon severing connections with you, we will be content with sending you to a monastery. Therefore, your life from now on and for your lifetime, you’re going to pass your time in the monastery as Heronia, the commoner, without any connection to the Inderon Baron House. Of course, any attempt to flee will not be tolerated. That is all.”

I finished speaking, having completely disregarded the former Baroness Heronia’s jumbled talk.

When my words sank in for her, her face that was brimming with happiness became warped with anger and bafflement.

“Father!! What in the world is this about?! Even though I’ve always told you that I was a special existence, why is this…?!”

“…”

“Baron Inderon, you are permitted to speak.”

Baron Inderon was about to snap angrily at his daughter to the point where his mouth was already open when he seemed to remember the king was present and sought permission with his eyes. My father slowly nodded in return.

“Heronia, are you still going to say such thing this late in the game? That’s enough, please take a look at reality. You’ve brought about such a serious matter. By all rights, under the law, it wouldn’t be strange for you to get a more severe punishment. Since it was a matter within the academy, you are able to get away with a punishment only to this degree. You should be grateful. I will also shoulder the fault of not being able to correct you despite having always having been anxious that things would turn out like this someday, so you should also reflect on your own action in the monastery for the remainder of your life, and this time, pray for the sake of other people every day. …These are my last words to my daughter.”

In response to the words that were slowly strung together former-Baroness Heronia opened her eyes wide.

Perhaps he had never seen that kind of appearance before, as Baron Inderon finished his words, he cast his eyes downward and averted his gaze away from her.

“W, weird. This is weird! Everything had gone smoothly until I entered Halm Academy, so why did things become like this? I thought that my happy harem life would begin the moment I entered the academy, but why?! This kind of conclusion shouldn’t have existed within that game!! Even though I am the heroine!!”

Having been forsaken by her parent, Baron Inderon, former-Baroness Heronia had a complete change in her countenance.

As she raised her voice, the knights stepped forward and held her down.

With her face flushed in fury now, I wonder if Baron Inderon’s final show of love as a parent even managed to reach her?

Nay. She most likely didn’t get it.

“That’s right. What about Pi-chan? Where did Pi-chan go?! If that child were here, everyone would know that I’m a special being. After all, that child was a holy…”

“If it’s about the bird you were keeping, he no longer exists in this world.”

“……Eh?”

Her gaze flickered around the empty air, looking for a help from the small bird who had continued to protect her by her side, for the special being who would have allowed her to be the [heroine], and then she stiffened.

No matter how much she searched, there was no sign of the bird…There couldn’t be.

The people who weren’t aware of that bird’s existence frowned at her suspicious behavior.

The same was true for the people were aware of the bird’s existence, yet were unaware of that bird’s true identity.

However, a stinging air of tension ran only among those who knew of that bird’s true identity.

With the situation being like this, no matter what she said, if the people here didn’t even acknowledge it, it would just be taken as a lie without anyone believing in the existence of spirits.

Still, if you consider the worst case scenario, you couldn’t help but to be on guard towards her behavior by all means.

“That time, in order to protect you—his master, his life was destroyed.”

“N-no way…”

“That is the result of your action. Also, it’s the future that the two of you chose.”

“W-wrong… N-no way… Lies! Pi-chan!!”

Despite her angrily laying the blame on the others up until now and never repented or lamented for anyone other than herself, on former-Baroness Heronia’s face, remorse and sorrow appeared for the first time.

Apparently, even though it was in a twisted form, there had certainly been a bond between her and her spirit.

I was a bit relieved about it. Could it mean I also possessed the heart to sympathize even if only a little, as I witnessed that light spirit’s last moments right before my eyes?

“Pi-chan! Pi-chan! Pi-chan!!”

The voice of former-Baroness Heronia resounded within the silent room.

However, even if she continued to tearfully call the name of her absent friend, the eyes of everyone watching on were still cold.

That didn’t mean that the hearts of the people in this place were cold, it meant that her actions had made them like that.

…Now then, the punishment has also been mostly settled, so shall I fulfill my promise in the end?

“Aah, that’s right. It might be out of topic, but I was asked to relay a message to you.”

Towards the girl who brokenly kept on calling for “Pi-chan,” I said that in a slow and clear voice.

As a response to my words, she looked at me with a gaze that was similar to a scowl, and I showed her my usual smile.

“[He] wanted me to tell you that [Even if his figure couldn’t be seen, he would always be by your side].”

The eyes of former-Baroness Heronia that were wet with tears were opened very wide.

Even if I didn’t say who, she probably understood from the distinct wording.

The people who didn’t know that the bird was a spirit should be contemplating who could possibly be applicable in this kind of conversation.

Or there might be some people who thought that I was joking or being sarcastic.

Well, at least they wouldn’t take it as the words that the bird said.

“Uu… aa… aah…”

She couldn’t even utter any words before the grief of losing the only friend who unconditionally became her ally and the words that the friend left behind. She only made some sounds that were similar to groans, and then simply cried without being able to even wipe away her tears.

Perhaps, her friend’s death was a more painful reality to her than being accused of her crimes.

If that was the case, then why didn’t she change the route to the calm future where she could spend her days with her friend, before things became this way? Though I was critical of her for it, we can’t do anything about things that have already occurred.

That’s why…

Let me provide you with a choice in light of my [gratitude] for the things that I was able to learn, and for the appeal that he made by risking his life.

I slowly approached her, as she continued to shed tears while staring at the floor in a daze and crouched over like a broken doll.

I commanded the people who tried to stop me out of worry with a light wave of my hand before I kneeled next to her and quietly brought my lips closer to her ears.

If it was the previous her, she would have boisterously made a racket going, “Kya-, kya-!”, but now, she didn’t even have the willpower to do so.

“This is a fragment of his consciousness… his soul. The monastery at the edge of the north believes in the [holy light]. If you continue to offer your prayers there, perhaps life would return once more to this fragment one day.”

I told her in a voice that others couldn’t hear and hung the leather strap of a pocket with a small white gem inside around her neck.

“That is [his] memento.”

What was attached to the undecorated leather strap earlier was a fragment of the light spirit’s core.

When he used up all his power and the thing that became his core was on the verge of shattering, I borrowed Zeno’s power to stop it and that was what was left behind.

Since a part of his will was supposed to remain in this thing, if she were to continue concentrating her efforts on offering prayers in a place that contained powerful light energy, perhaps the power that would gather in the fragment’s vicinity could allow him to regain his life as a spirit again.

Naturally, since the thing that remained on her hand was nothing more than a [fragment], it won’t become a complete [Pi-chan] anymore, though.

However, I think that it’s much more reasonable rather than thinking of him when seeing grains of light dispersed in the air, and also this way she would also feel hope.

“Now, let me present you with a choice.”

A small amount of hope showed in her vacant eyes, and after looking at the white gem hanging on her neck, she slowly looked at my face.

“Between the monastery at the northernmost tip with a harsh environment and the monastery located in a relatively mild land that’s only a 3 day journey by carriage from the royal capital, which one do you want to go to?”

“Ah… I…”

If it was the same as usual, there was no doubt that she’d choose the monastery closer to the royal capital.

After all, life would be remarkably easier in a mild temperate.

…However, light energy was quite weak there, so it won’t be suitable for healing the light spirit that had already been destroyed.

Will she choose her own life, or will she choose a friend’s life?

The light spirit gave up his own life for her sake.

That being the case, how far are you willing to go for his sake?

If, for example you don’t have the will to go that far, then it’d be better for you to quickly release him.

So that he’d become a part of a new spirit that would be born one day, and find a new happiness.

“I-I…”

“The options that I’ll give to you will only be those two options. After all, I’m not as soft-hearted as Bertia.”

I faced her with a smile on my whole face, and she gulped while staring at me.

“I will… I will…”

Former-Baroness Heronia bit her lips firmly.

Then, after looking at the white gem for a while, she stared firmly at me with eyes that carried a passionate light.

“I will go to the north.”

The girl who declared her will clearly with a heavy voice was no longer the [heroine].

She had changed into a woman who possessed a strong will and desire to help her friend.

……Probably, right?

  1. Dave

The amount of care that I have for Heronia still hasn’t increased

    • AsianOtakuGuy

Neither has the amount of f*cks I give for her tbh

    • Wieng

Same here bro, good thing now: she’s going very far and we (if lucky) will not hear of her again

      • Irerotte

        Seconded! XD

      • LynneSuzuran

I guess the author will focus more on our beloved Cecil and Bertia XD
Not sure if the author will write more about Heronia, but if the author did, hopefully it wasn’t anything annoying–but rather, something heartwarming or good enough~

    • LynneSuzuran

Rather than ‘care’, I’m more curious on what the future will bring for her XD

  2. Mernaruki

    Thanks for the chapter ❤~

    • LynneSuzuran

      You’re welcome :3

  3. Mellitus

    Thanks 4 the chapter!
It’s a little hard reading about her downfall. Difference between Heronia’s and Bertia’s situation is miniscule. Both reincarnated into otome game, blindly believed into scenario and clumsily tried to follow it. Only that Bertia had reliable Cecil working in the shadows for her. I feel immense pity for Heronia.

    • xacual

Except Bertia, while believing the game scenario was absolute, did everything for the happiness of other people. She got all her and Cecil’s acquaintances together. She wanted the heroine to get with Cecil because she thought that would be the happiest end for him. To be blunt she might have saw the world as a game, but she also saw everyone that lived in the world as actual people.

Heronia did everything out of selfishness. She never once thought of the world as anything but a game for her benefit. She never truly tried to do anything because she assumed the world would just bend over backwards on her behalf because she was the “heroine”.

      • Ryss

And she wanted to get a personal HAREM!!!

        • LynneSuzuran

And was very obvious about it that it became annoying XD

      • MelisaArtemis

Agreed. Very much agreed. I think it is exactly the point of this chapter: The situation between Heronia and Bertia could have been so easily switched around. Hell, in another situation (AKA if only Heronia wasn’t so hell bent on antagonizing Bertia AND aiming for a reverse harem), they could have been the perfect best friends, supporting Cecil together. Alas….

        • LynneSuzuran

Oh, I’ve read another novel under a similar premise–but with the difference being the heroine and the villainess competing in a healthy manner, and that the heroine yielded in the end, admitted defeat, and seemed to want to be good friends or rivals with the villainess XD
Now that’s a very good friendship scenario, but yes, alas…

          • saihamaru

            bakarina?
            i don’t think so…. source please 😀

          • LynneSuzuran

            Sorry for my late reply!
The title is The Villainous Lady Aims to Overthrow the Heroine~
It was a good and short read ^^

        • DMR

To be fully fair though, she thought she was in a game. That was something that messed with her mind.

She inherently probably wasn’t evil.. but she never properly interacted with the characters and expected them to work like a game…

It was only once her spirit died that she realized that it wasn’t a game, that the character was real.

Think about it; she lived believing that her happy ending would save the world. So she rushes towards that happy ending, not realizing that it wasn’t as she thought it was…

If she was just incarnated into a different world, or didn’t know about the game, she might have acted different. But she had a set future for her that should have been perfect for everyone except Bertia (but in the game, Bertia was a villain)…

She’s pitiful… but she’s at fault for not realizing that things were different. She didn’t go through any of the routes but expected to get the ending for it…

      • Kiroza

Noy entirely accurate. Bertia loved Cecil and wanted the best ending for him, which is a good thing but still selfish. Do not forget that if she had successfully turned her father evil, people would have suffered nonetheless. Like her, Heronia also wanted the best ending involving Cecil, granted she wanted a harem too but wanting more is human nature. The fact that she decisively chose Cecil route for the ending is also proof that she cares for the people around her. Remember any route where Cecil wasnt chosen usually leads to a negative outcome for the kingdom. Sure she acts the way she does but given the information she had and the role she was in, there was no reason for her to act otherwise. After everything is said and done she was merely a child who doesnt understand what she did wrong because she was following a story to the best ending. It does not forgive her for being the way she is but how could she have known that Cecil was no longer the ticking time bomb both Heronia and Bertia saw in the game.

        • LynneSuzuran

Whoa, that’s a very nice analysis and I have to say that I agree! OwO
If Bertia succeeded in making her father evil… ORZ imagine all the possibilities!
I guess the star of luck is on Bertia’s side that she managed to arrive at this conclusion…

          • Silver

I don’t agree with Kiroza’s analysis. It simplifies the situations and the nuances between Heronia and Bertia’s personal characteristics too much. It also white-washes too much of Heronia’s actions and decisions.

Bertia’s kindness is part of her very core that even when she tried to do evil deeds, she subconsciously does in such way that the least number of people will be hurt. That’s why she continuously failed to be a proper villain every time she tried. She is basically the type that refuses to sacrifice one to save many. She’s an idiot as you can’t save everyone. However, that very trait is what leads her to her current situation.

Heronia, however, may have good (Kiroza’s defense is really stretching it) intentions but was the type to willingly hurt other people for the supposed better ending, contrary to Bertia. Heronia did not even bother to learn who Bertria, in this universe, really is and the entire time, tried to force Bertia to sacrifice herself for the “better future.” Is that really kindness? Doesn’t help that Heronia is conveniently the “heroine” and thus, will the beneficiary of all the good things. On the contrary, look at Bertia. She’s the villain, seriously tried to play the villain role, yet still ends up helping so many people, which is why she’s so popular to everyone in the academy. That’s because her true kindness and caring for other people still came through even when she tried to act evil. Heronia clearly lacks the selflessness and kindness that Bertria has, and ironically, supported Heronia’s endeavor to marry Cecil for the sake of the kingdom (her selflessness) AND for the supposed happiness of Ceceil, who she loves (her selfishness), the entire time.

This is a story about how two characters in such similar situation, with the very same knowledge of the world, in opposite roles, could have completely opposite effects of their intended role due to nuances in their character.

“how could she have known that Cecil was no longer the ticking time bomb both Heronia and Bertia saw in the game.”
This, particularly, annoyed me. How could she have known that Cecil was no longer the ticking time bomb? By simply observing, thinking, and show kindness to guide people back to the proper path, if necessary. Heronia shown NONE of that. Heronia got what she deserved. Heronia is a far, far cry from that adorable heroine in Bakarina’s story.

          • LynneSuzuran

I guess it all goes down to how their past memories play a big role in their personalities… As the heroine, Heronia felt cocky and that she was a special being, so important, and then it made her turn out selfish and refused to see the situation… She then acted selfishly, contrary to what might be the kind Heronia portrayed in the original game.
…Meanwhile as Bertia’s personality wasn’t distorted since her mother didn’t die, Bertia retained her original kindness and became more like what a heroine should be like XD

          • Silver

Oh, to add, I actually pity Heronia. However, I don’t empathize nor sympathize with her. Her actions have gone too far past that. However, that being said, I FULLY agree that she has rights to repent. Everyone has the right to repent, thus, I’m glad Cecil allowed her this chance. And if she changes for the better good? She’s welcome back with full open arms 😀

          • LynneSuzuran

Yeah, I think we could pity Heronia… but I pity Pi-chan more than her X”D Pi-chan is adorable maybe that’s why
I’m really glad Heronia still has a conscience to repent and to help her only friend, Pi-chan, if not I’d vote for her to be murdered in cold blood–ehh okay, that might be too much of a punishment XD
I haven’t read ahead of what I’ve translated, but it’d be nice if we could have a glimpse to Heronia and Pi-chan’s ending and maybe if we could see her actually changing for good! ^^

      • LynneSuzuran

Oof, your reply is more well-said and complete than mine XD
I’ll give you two thumbs up and many nods of agreement~

      • DMR

But you are ignoring a few specific points. Bertia was originally meant to have an unhappy ending, and if things got messed up, innocent people would die and there would be war and suffering.

But Heronia is the opposite. In the future, her going for her happy ending was what kept the world peaceful.

Both people had nearly the exact same goals. Think about that.

The real difference was that Heronia had the role of heroine and Bertia didn’t. That’s the entire problem.

Bertia knew she was getting a bad end and that her selfishness could get people killed. Heronia on the other hand lived with the idea that her selfishness would save lives.

Neither realized that the world became it’s own until it became too late.

Heronia probably wasn’t actually a bad girl, and if she realized the world was real sooner, she’d have probably been completely different.

But she viewed herself and everyone else as game characters.

It doesn’t help that the light spirit kept on encouraging the idea, rather than waking her up from it and realize that things were different.

I mean, while she’s annoying, it’s actually tragic that she only got to this point because she expected to be the heroine and get what was supposed to be given to her.

    • LynneSuzuran

If you put it that way, that’s true.
But I guess Heronia is also at fault since she has such an irritating attitude or behavior–like, trying to do anything in order to achieve her goal or the scenario. Unlike Bertia who’s really kind ><

  4. kirindas

    Thanks for the new chapter!

    • LynneSuzuran

      You’re welcome :3

  5. Kvetha

Thank you very much for the chapter!

    • LynneSuzuran

      You’re welcome :3

  6. Tran

Eh, not sure why the story is trying to elicit sympathy for her at this late stage. Heronia isn’t some innocent victim or anything. She used lies, manipulation, and literal magical mind alteration to try and destroy innocent people in pursuit of her own desires.

    • darklain0725

Not sympathy, only the opportunity to repent. And repent is allowed to all, even the lowest and most evil of sinners.

      • LynneSuzuran

It’s not too late for anyone to repent… I guess that applies for Heronia, and hopefully she’ll be able to live more properly from now on XD

    • LynneSuzuran

Yup, I also wonder why… I pity Pi-chan more than Heronia… but at the same time, that light spirit was so blinded by his love to Heronia that it became so detrimental for both of them at the same time >< ...but maybe Heronia's original disposition was the thing that influenced their downfall the most.

  7. Sgt.Tin

I like the way this story give this character a chance to repent and also show that our prince isn’t just a heartless. He sympathized that light spirit and give this girl a chance to repay that light spirit’s kindness, it’s good that her choose to take a chance present to her.

    Thanks for the chapter desu

    • LynneSuzuran

Yup, Cecil is becoming more humane instead of the android prince portrayed in the original game, and that’s a really good thing~!
I also like it that the villainess didn’t get the capital punishment but was given the chance to repent and to try to be a better person instead.

  8. Canari

Finally she got hit with reality check. Now she can grow in personality.

    • LynneSuzuran

Yup, I hope so too :3

  9. FateMaker

Dammit. I was a bit sorry for her at first when she choose prince to stop him from being puppet. But that ‘happy harem’ sentence came up, all my pity are gone.

    • Cipher

It was clear she wanted a reverse harem since the beginning as she was pursuing all the capture targets.

    • LynneSuzuran

Mmhm, I was surprised and read that line twice, making sure that I didn’t misread it X”D

  10. whiteclover

“? I thought that my happy harem life would begin the moment I entered the academy, but why?!”

what?! I will swear word at you! baby let me hit you one more time! but it’s okay. at least at the very end she pick the right choice.

    • LynneSuzuran

Seriously, if she didn’t pick Pi-chan over her ease of life, I’ll really be angry at her–definitely hate her, and want to have the adorable and poor Pi-chan QvQ

  11. Cipher

    Thanks for the chapter.

It’s been days since Pi-chan’s death and she only now just realize? Her obliviousness to reality is that strong huh.

I hope that if Pi-chan does come back, he doesn’t spoil her again.

    • LynneSuzuran

Did she think Pi-chan was only taking a break and a fly to somewhere else? Not sure how the bond between the spirit and their master works, but I question the fact that she didn’t question the fact that Pi-chan was gone missing after that incident…
And in my imagination, after years of praying, Heronia managed to recover Pi-chan, but Pi-chan lost all memories of Heronia and became very cautious against her… Then, it’s Heronia’s turn to spoil Pi-chan and to win his trust :3

  12. alices4e

i read this chapter before my english Exam lololkl thanks for the chapter~

    • LynneSuzuran

Thanks for reading and commenting, hope it was a good “exercise” before your exam back then XD

  13. Zuben

An absorbing novel…thank you for your hard work!

    • LynneSuzuran

Np, glad you enjoyed it… Wait, is it the Zuben that I know who translate? XDD

  14. Eli

Pet theory: it’s not healthy to have previous life memories shoved into your head when you’re a small kid. Both Heronia and Bertia suffered irrevocable brain damage as a result.
It would explain so many things.

    • LynneSuzuran

…XD agreed tho, haha! They’re way too absorbed with their past memories it obstructed them to see anything else!

  15. Ashcheul

I really liked this chapter. Liked that Heronia is emotionally attached to Pii-chan and was smitten by news of his death. Liked that she chose to prioritize her friend when given choise.

I like that doll constructed the sotuation for her to make this choice.

    • LynneSuzuran

Yup, me too! I’m weak against Pi-chan from the moment he was portrayed like a small child that didn’t know what was wrong and what was not… He moved simply because he was too fond of Heronia… If only he got a more… “sane”? “sober”? “smart”? owner, I’m sure Pi-chan wouldn’t end up like that. I was so glad that Heronia chose Pi-chan, because if not, I’d come over to their world just to strangle her, haha!

  16. readerMax

Heronia is really pitiful because Cecil would have find her ‘interesting’ if Bertia’s past memory did not exist. Considering that Heronia is the heroine, she find it safer to just follow the otome plot, while Bertia needs to break the plot in order to succeed. Because of that, the plot had become unreliable by the time Heronia enters the academy.

Basically, Heronia loses to Bertia all because Bertia is luckier by being able to have the head start. Honestly it’s really sad for Heronia because anything else she wants to do in academy stage had already been spoiled by Bertia’s actions. No wonder Heronia feels frustrated and it is really unfair to judge her all because Heronia is being portrayed as villain. In the end, she also couldn’t get her prince, not because she is not good enough but because Cecil had already been taken by Bertia a long time ago. You can’t really compete well in such unfair situation.

Also, Heronia was kind of forced to pick the prince Cecil because all of the other targets has been made unavailable by Bertia’s meddling. We know this is because Bertia wants Cecil to have the happy ending with Heronia but all Bertia is really doing is pushing a guy she had already conquered to Heronia to marry to avoid the android prince ending which I think it is really unfair to Heronia. Heronia’s downfall was really caused by Bertia and so, Bertia is truly the real bug in the story and not Heronia.

    • Andy

      Oh, C’mon.
I admit you’re right in general, but no matter how much Bertia’s ruined the plot in the begining because, yes, she messed up her relationship with Cecil, I’ll grant you that. But the truth is that she earned every bit of hatred from the other targets to be an insufferable and self-centered person.
Honestly: I just had to open the damn eyes to see how EVERYBODY was seeing her with hate, not only Bertia and her “henchmen” but every time she made a scene that had no relation or drew lines from nothing. She knew the development of the game just like Bertia, it was enough to steal the flags with the other targets here and there instead of stubbornly clinging to something that EVIDENTLY was not working.
The only way I temporarily thought of excusing her was when Cecil hinted that perhaps she had also been contaminated or influenced by the spirit of light. Only that time. But of course, that flag was already shattered in this chapter seeing that her shitty attitudeis is still accurate. Come on, they dragging her chained to the courtroom after keeping her imprisoned for days, there was no way they were going to congratulate her for nothing.

I agree with Andy here XD
While it’s true that the initial premise was broken thanks to Bertia being so kind and interesting, Cecil couldn’t feel anything towards Heronia because of her wrong ways and intention. As I think the one trait that attracted Cecil was Bertia’s kindheartedness, which was definitely not there in Heronia. Heronia was too obsessed by the fact that she was the heroine and acted so selfishly, unconscious that her action turned off the others’ good impression towards her. If only she wasn’t blinded by the knowledge that she was the heroine, she might be able to see that things weren’t working, and perhaps she could have taken a different route not available in-game… but yeah, that wasn’t how it worked.

Also, Heronia was trying to go for the Harem route at first, which was evidently bad since this world wasn’t the same as the game (but she was blind to that fact). However, it might be true since Bertia’s meddling caused Heronia to be unable to pick the other targets, but with her personality that deviated from how it was in the game, I didn’t think Heronia would earn any of the targets’ affection. …We all need to find out if the game-Heronia also abused the light spirit’s power or not, but we would never find that out, I guess. I’ll just assume that the game Heronia didn’t do that and was really of pure personality, because that was how most otome games work XD

As for who or what was the bug… I believe the bug was the two girls’ intact past memories. Without their past memories, I think the game scenario could work as it dictated.

No problem, glad to know that you’re happy with this continued translation! I remembered being so curious on this novel because it was so good, and after obtaining the saved RAW (webnovel version before it got deleted), I decided to try and continue this story ^^

I’m only readying this novel now, but I’ve got a bad feeling about sending her to the north. What happens, when the bird really comes back and she tries sth. again?
Don’t give your enemies a change to come back.
